Prime paneling with a latex, stain-blocking primer. For even coverage, we recommend having your primer tinted with colorant similar to the finished paint. Use a roller with a medium nap to paint paneling. It should have a long enough nap to fill the vertical grooves in the paneling, but short enough to leave a smooth surface.

We also advise using a roller with a large or adjustable handle. This will help you reach the entire span of the wall with ease. Once the primer has dried, finish it with two coats of latex wall paint. While painting over wood paneling takes a bit of extra preparation, the end result looks clean and crisp. It's a great "white" with warm wood tones. I have a soft cream color with a touch of beige with my light oak cabinets. The finish on your cabinets has probably ambered over time - increasing the natural red undertones of oak.

If they have never been refinished, they also probably show 60 years of wear. If the doors are solid wood and not veneer consider having them refinished. Because they are flat the job should not be that difficult and may not cost too much.

You can also have just a few doors done at a time over several months to spread out the cost. The fresher finish will be much easier to work with. If you do consider refinishing, talk to the refinisher about using a light stain that will not go into the grain too much if you wish to keep the cabinets light to mid tone. The grain in oak is pretty but can become too much of a good thing if it becomes too pronounced.

I actually used a gel stain to prevent over staining the grain. Yes - the hollow core flat doors lack architectural interest. They also are not that expensive. You could replace some of the main level doors with paneled ones. We did ours a few at a time. The wood ones would add value to your home. I live in a college town in the Midwest. There are plenty painting their cabinets - and doing a poor job in many cases, but there is a strong environmental streak in the young combined with a very practical streak in the older.

Midwesterners, especially in more rural areas, often pride themselves in being resistant to trends. Oak has been featured more and is making a comeback - in a more raw or less golden form. Sometimes it is white oak or just lighter finishes. Some of the problem with older cabinets from the 80's and 90's is the polyurethane finish has ambered over time intensifying the golden hue.

Before you even pick up a sponge to begin using this toxic cleaner, put on protective gear—full-sleeve clothing, rubber gloves, glasses, and a respiratory mask—and open windows in the room to adequately ventilate. Then, dilute TSP in a bucket of water and wipe down the wood paneling with a sponge dampened in the solution.

Even though it takes only 20 or 30 minutes, scuffing gives you long-lasting insurance against chipping paint. Just be sure to wear a dust mask and, for health reasons as well as cleanliness, wipe away dust with a tack cloth or damp rag as you go. Save yourself from having to scrub errant paint drips and splatter off the floor after the paint job is complete by laying down a bunch of old newspaper or a drop cloth.

If there is molding or ceiling that you do not want the paint to inadvertently color. Having finished scuffing the full width and height of the wood paneling to be painted, give the surface its initial coat of primer to prevent any of the wood grain, imperfections, and the like from showing through the final coat of paint.

Choosing the right primer is key.
